Muzzle brakes come in all shapes and sizes. The most efficient, and also the noisiest are the types that vent gas at a 90 degree angle to the bore, usually through 2 or 3 large ports. These are also the most efficient. They have to be "timed" to the barrel threads to be square and are best left in situ when cleaning.
The other type is the pepperpot or "Vais" style. These don't have to be timed and vent gas in every direction radially. These are still very efficient, but considerably quieter.
All types MUST be fitted EXACTLY in line with the bore and reamed approximatly .020" over the size of the bore. This ensures maximum efficiency.
